With its beautiful architecture, lively music and arts scene - and with shops to rival London's Regent St – Glasgow's status as a 'must see' city has never looked stronger.

And what a time to see it. The 20th Commonwealth Games, which kicked off last week and will run through until August 3rd, shows Glasgow at its very best.

If you have some spare time during your visit, make sure you check out some of the great festivals and events that will be on during the 11 days of the Games.

The Merchant City Festival (24th July – 3rd August) is Glasgow's annual celebration of live music, art, theatre, food and drink. A great way to get your bearings around the city is by joining one of the 'Glasgow Style' walking tours. This is also a great way to check out some of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's architectural masterpieces.

For something a little more quirky, we suggest joining Janey Godley's Glasgow Gallivant – a comedy vintage bus tour of Glasgow's glittering East-End.

If you just want to people watch and soak up the atmosphere, head over to Ingram Wynd for an afternoon of food and music on the 2nd/3rd August.

Don't miss Glasgow's city park (Just 15 mins walk from the centre of the city) which has been transformed into the Green Live Zone for the duration of the games. There will be fun activities for all of the family and if you time it right, you'll even get to see live events such as the Cycling Road Race (which starts and finishes at the park). Entry is free and the park is un-ticketed (with the exception of the closing ceremony).
