Residents in Brighton have reacted to a freak storm - by streaking in the streets.

Parts of south-east Britain have been hit by flash flooding and travel disruption as hail and thunderstorms batter Sussex and the surrounding counties.

The severe weather has been described as a "zombie apocalypse" - and brought out this strange reaction in these three friends, reports the Metro.

The picture was uploaded to Twitter by TV presenter Annabel Giles, who lives in Brighton. She wrote: "KempTown residents' reaction to the thunderstorm: #brighton #soproud

Almost half a month's worth of rain fell in an hour in some places as train services were cancelled and homes were flooded.

A lightning strike sparked disruption for rail passengers during the morning rush hour, while firefighters rescued people from homes and cars hit by floods.

The lightning hit an electricity sub-station near Hove in Sussex, causing power to the coastal rail route to be cut, according to a Network Rail (NR) spokeswoman.

Meanwhile trains were not calling call at Worthing station in the Hove direction due to flooding in a subway.

A number of people uploaded pictures of the storm on social media on Monday morning.

One user, Ivy Arch, wrote: "Newland Rd flooded, tarmac breaking. This good man, barefoot in rainy road directs traffic away from peril."

Over in London, firefighters have had to rescue a number of people trapped in their homes and cars after flash flooding hit the west.

According to the Evening Standard, fire crews rescued two women who became stuck in a car surrounded by floodwater near South Ruislip Station.

One commuter even tweeted a picture of travellers wading through water at Ruislip Manor Station.

The good news for commuters in London is that the hot weather is set to return on Tuesday, with temperatures reaching up to 27C.
