The UK has enjoyed a a series of glorious sunny days - and it looks like the heatwave is set to continue this week.

Beach and park-goers enjoyed temperatures of 26C on Sunday, and forecasters say the mercury could hit 31C by the end of the week.

Last Friday was confirmed as the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures reaching 32C in Gravesend, Kent.

Leon Brown, forecaster at The Weather Channel, told Aol Travel: "It will be a very warm week ahead with plenty of sunshine. Temperatures widely in the mid to upper 20s Celsius away from eastern coasts where there will be cooler east to north east breezes.

"Some of the highest temperatures will be in the west, so 28C in west Wales and 28C in southern and western England. Even central to western Scotland will see temperatures of 27C or possibly 28C in the middle of this week."

Met Office forecaster Tom Morgan was a little more optimistic, suggesting that temperatures could reach 31C or higher. He told The Sun: "Peak temperatures of 28°C or higher every day through the next week are quite likely, picking up from midweek. They probably won't get higher than 31°C but it can't be ruled out."

However, Leon adds there is a risk of afternoon showers and scattered thunderstorms over the south west on Thursday, and then across central England by Friday with some local heavy downpours in Devon and Cornwall.

He continued: "For the Commonwealth games temperatures will be around 26C in Glasgow on Wednesday with mostly sunny weather and light winds. It will be similar on Thursday, Friday and Saturday too, with temperatures a warm 24C to 25C."

Leon added that it may turn cooler by Sunday with some showery rain moving south.

But, according to The Sun, the Met Office reports that above-average temps will continue for the next three weeks until the middle of August.
