Brad Pitt dines at a branch of WIMPY in Billericay

Brad Pitt made an unusual dining choice on Tuesday night this week - having dinner in a branch of WIMPY in Billericay in Essex. Locals claim he went into the burger chain with his security guards, and spent £6.35 on a cheeseburger and chips. A staff member said he had promised to pop back later in the week for some donuts.

It's just one of many down-market celebrity shopping surprises.%VIRTUAL-SkimlinksPromo%
The Daily Mirror reported the sighting, and added that Pitt is in the UK at the moment filming the sequel to World War Z in Essex. The Standard added that he had popped into a local pub for a pint later that evening - but chose to drink it in private in one of the conference rooms.

His low-brow culinary tastes come as something of a surprise. However, this isn't the first time he has been spotted shopping at the budget end of the market. At Christmas in 2010 he and his wife Angelina Jolie were seen buying Christmas toys at their local Kmart.

Celebrity bargains

And he's not the first celebrity to have surprised us with his downmarket shopping habits.

In March Cold Feet star Hermione Norris said she still bought Asda Smart Price products, because TV work didn't pay half as well as everyone thinks.

Back in December Chelsea footballer John Terry was spotted shopping in Poundworld in Woking. He even posed for a photo with a fan.

A couple of months earlier Britney Spears admitted she'd popped into Poundland (for a box of novelty matches) while she was in the UK - and was a regular at 99 cent stores at home.

Back in 2012 when Susan Boyle was said to be worth £22 million, she was spotted in her local Poundland.

Over in the US, Michelle Obama was photographed in 2011 shopping at discount store Target. She never made a secret of the fact that she likes the shop - mentioning it during the 2008 Presidential campaign, and being photographed in a dress from the store in 2009.

And Kate Moss is another celebrity who is known to mix cheaper brands with designer fashions. She caused a run on Primark capes in 2011 when she was photographed wearing one to the Isle of Wight Festival.

This takes time, but once you know the cost of a phone call, putting the dryer on, or a bag of potatoes, it enables you to judge far better how much you can afford to consume.

Once you know the base price, you are in a position to keep your eyes open for a better offer. If you see a discount you can judge for yourself whether it actually constitutes a bargain. For bigger things like utilities it enables you to do a proper price comparison and see if you can cut your bills.

Don't just assume that the premium range is better, try the every-day brand, or even the basic version and see if you spot the difference. Likewise, consider trading down your supermarket from one of the big players to local markets or discounters like Aldi.

If you plan what you buy to match what you actually cook and eat then not only will you be able to budget far more effectively, but you'll also waste much less and find your money goes further without you having to try.

If you can't think of a way to get your meat for less, consider a vegetarian day once a week. If you can't find petrol any cheaper, then work on making your driving as efficient as possible. The more you can think of clever alternatives the less you will have to make painful cuts to make ends meet.
