Over-50s students may never repay their loans

Older people are increasingly signing up for university courses - and many of them are taking out student loans that they may never repay.

An analysis of figures from the Government-owned Student Loans Company, carried out by the Daily Telegraph, shows that 5,030 over-50s are claiming a tuition fee loan, up from 4,550 in the last academic year. These included 540 people aged over 60, and 40 aged 70 or over. The total amount borrowed by these people is believed to be as much as £67 million a year.
