Sitting on a train is by far the most civilised way to travel. Instead of hurtling down a motorway or flying above the clouds to get to your chosen destination, you get to sit back, relax and take in the beautiful views from the comfort of your carriage.
The railways of Europe have much to offer the armchair traveller, from brooding mountains and placid lakes to sunny beaches and rolling seas. We asked Kate Andrews, co-founder of the rail-booking specialist Loco2.com, which connects stations across the UK to thousands of European destinations to make booking a train as simple as booking a flight, to share 10 of her favourite scenic ways to ride the rails.
