Video: Keeping calm in the face of an imminent crash

Breaking records has never been an easy business; it takes special people to continually push the boundaries of what we know to be possible and to go further and accomplish more.
And, when you are venturing into uncharted territory, it's very easy for things to go wrong – as happened to pro driver Guerlain Chicherit when he attempted the longest ever car jump in a rally-special Mini Countryman, at the French ski resort of Tignes.

Documented in a unique video, the daring Frenchman takes a number of attempts at the jump, launching his specialised car over the 101m distance with ease in a number of practice runs.

However, when it comes to the main event, things go horribly awry. Powering from the launch ramp at over 130kmph (81mph), the Mini begins to over-rotate in the air, leaving it pointing nose first at the ground.

Despite realising the imminent carnage that is about to befall him, Chicherit remains calm, showing no emotion as he slams onto the deck and is punted into an end-over-end roll, which sees the Mini cartwheel down the ramp, bouncing off the floor, before eventually coming to a stop in a crumpled heap.

Thankfully, Chicherit wasn't badly injured in the spectacular crash. You can watch the footage of his crash below, just don't try this one at home!
