Couple die in Salford boy-racer smash
A horrific three-car collision on the A580 in Salford has left a man and a woman dead.
The unidentified couple, believed to be in their 20s, were travelling in a white Vauxhall Corsa when it was crashed into by a pair of Audi hatchbacks, which had been travelling at very high speeds.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His female passenger was rushed to Salford Royal hospital but died a short time after arrival.
Police believe the drivers of the Audis may have been racing each other at the time of the collision, the Manchester Evening News (MEN) reports. Both have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and are currently being questioned.
Witnesses to the accident say they saw the high powered Audis – an S3 and an RS3 – were speeding before both losing control. It is believed the two black hatchbacks collided with each other before smashing into the Corsa, which had just pulled out of a junction at Barton Road.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the crash, which occurred outside Swinton Park golf club on Sunday.
A witness, who was one of the first on the scene, told the MEN: "I heard the impact, a screech then bangs and dust flying up. Both Audis were damaged but one caught fire. People were running out of the golf club to help.
"We believe that one clipped the other before the crash. We went out and tried to stop traffic and clear the road up. It looked like the passenger side of the car took the brunt of the smash."
