Train bosses have apologised following major delays on the Norwich to London Liverpool Street line.

Services between London Liverpool Street and Norwich were disrupted in both directions after a train stopped, blocking the line near Chelmsford on Tuesday evening, reports the BBC.

According to the rail operator, overhead cable problems in Essex was the cause of the disruption, ITV reports.

Commuters in three counties were affected by the disruption and some were delayed for up to five hours.

Abellio Greater Anglia apologised to passengers for the "delays and cancellations".

"I would like to apologise for the delays and cancellations that affected our Mainline services throughout the evening of Tuesday 17 June. These were caused by an overhead power line problem between Chelmsford and Hatfield Peverel which resulted in a train failing, blocking one of the two lines, explained managing director Jamie Burles.

"Whilst we aimed to provide alternative services wherever possible, the reduced line capacity did unfortunately result in lengthy delays for many customers. We will be holding a full investigation into the incident with Network Rail as part of our follow-up to help avoid any repeat of this problem and the widespread disruption caused", he added.

According to a statement on the company's website, passengers who were unable to use their tickets on Tuesday as a result of the disruptions. were able to use them on Wednesday.
