A British holidaymaker has died in Portugal's Algarve after falling 10 metres down a well while taking photos.

The 60-year-old woman was photographing the Arade Dame on Thursday and entered a fenced-off area where she stepped onto a manhole lid and fell 30ft down a concrete well, the Daily Star reports.

Emergency workers rushed to her aid but the woman died at the scene.

"Two [firefighters] descended by a cable to try to revive the victim, but without success,' Captain Luís Simões, of the local fire department, told the Daily Mail.

The woman was not named. The Foreign Office said: "We are aware of the death of a British national in the Algarve, Portugal, on 12 June.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this time."
