A woman believed to be in her 70s has died after being hit by a bus on London's Oxford Street.

The woman was struck by the 137 bus outside Selfridge's department store on London's busiest shopping street, the Metropolitan Police has said.

The accident happened shortly before 3pm yesterday on Oxford Street, at the junction with Duke Street.

The woman, was taken to St Mary's Hospital where she died.

Both the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended.

The driver of the 137 route bus, which runs between Streatham Hill in South London and Oxford Street, stopped at the scene and has not been arrested.

The woman has not yet been formally identified.

A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision.
