A man has been killed and eaten by a saltwater crocodile after being snatched from a boat during a fishing trip in the Kakadu National Park in Australia.

The 62-year-old man was with his wife, son and daughter-in-law when the attack took place at around 5pm on Saturday afternoon.

The family were at the remote Flying Fox waterhole on a fishing trip, and the man was washing or emptying a bucket at the time of the attack, say police.

According to the Daily Mail, the man's remains were found inside a 4.7m long crocodile shot dead by police in Adelaide river, south of Darwin.

A second crocodile was also shot during the search for the man.

It is believed the family launched their boat in waters about 90 minutes by road from the Cooinda tourist centre.

Speaking to NT News, Sgt Andrew Hocking urged visitors to exercise caution when visiting areas known to inhabit crocodiles.

"(There is) always a potential for crocodile attack," he said.

"I encourage people to think carefully about their safety at all times.

"The water is deep in this billabong ... a number of large crocodiles obviously frequent this area."

Cooinda is a popular tourist destination in Kakadu National Park, where the original Crocodile Dundee film was shot.

Commander Bruce Porter of the Northern Command told the Courier Mail: "This is a tragic event and our thoughts are with the family during this very difficult time."
