Uk weather: June to start with two weeks of rain

After a washout Bank Holiday and a lacklustre week in between, the UK summer is not set to pick up anytime soon - with weather forecasters warning June will kick off with two weeks of rain.

According to the Metro, it's not a sunny start to summer, with the Met Office warning of heavy rain until the end of the week.

And Kirsty McCabe, meteorologist atThe Weather Channel agreed, telling Aol Travel: "There will be wet weather to come next week with scattered showers and some longer spells of rain. There will be some brighter and warmer spells between the showers, though quite breezy at times with relatively chilly nights.

"Tuesday will be another unsettled day and some outbreaks of heavy rain in the northwest. Some drier and brighter spells between the showers but the generally unsettled theme continues through the week."

She added that temperatures would remain "seasonable" with the average at this time of year being 13C to 15C for Scotland and Northern Ireland and 15C to 18C in England and Wales.

The news comes as experts warn that heavy summer rain and flooding will intensify in Britain as global warming takes hold.

Short, sharp downpours could become an increasingly unwanted characteristic of the British summer if the effects of global warming are to continue.

A landmark study by the Met Office and Newcastle University has identified how climate change could result in heavier summer rainfall, which in turn could increase the risk of flash flooding.

The study, published in the Nature and Climate Change journal, said: "Short duration rain events are predicted to intensify during the summer months in the southern United Kingdom.

"This predicted increase means more events would exceed the Met Office and Environment Agency Flood Forecasting Centre guidance threshold for serious flash flooding."
