New 2014 Toyota Yaris unveiled
Set to compete in the busy supermini sector against rivals that include the Ford Fiesta and the Mini Cooper, new Yaris enters the fray having undergone 576,000 hours of important research and development to ensure it is the car that customers want.
That means exterior styling has been dragged into 2014 via a more distinctive 'X' front end with large honeycomb grille, the adoption of LED light clusters and pronounced fog lamp surrounds. The rear has also been tweaked, so it now sports a reshaped bumper and fettled licence plate surround.
Some of the biggest changes occur inside, where new Yaris embraces a revised dash and door panels fashioned from more 'premium-feel' materials, as well as a new 6.1-inch 'Touch 2' multimedia system.
Customers looking for an improved driving experience will be pleased to hear that the updated model features major revisions to its chassis and suspension, while the electronic power steering has been recalibrated to offer more feedback to the driver.
Technical revisions to the 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine mean it now emits under the coveted 100g/km CO2 emissions mark and averages an impressive 86mpg – an improvement of 6mpg over the previous model.
The developments underneath the bonnet have also seen a reduction in vibration and noise, Toyota claims, making longer journeys more comfortable for occupants.
A 1.3-litre petrol, a 1.4-litre diesel engine and the range-topping hybrid model will remain available from all Toyota dealers.
Although official pricing figures are yet to be unveiled, it is predicted that new Yaris will start at around £10,000 and rise to £16,000 for the range-topping hybrid models.
