A fearless motocross rider has become the first person to successfully jump Bournemouth's historic pier.

Dan Whitby, an extreme freestyle motocross (FMX) extraordinaire, made the historic leap on Sunday afternoon.

Crowds watched with bated breath as Norfolk-born Dan cleared the landmark with a backdrop of beautiful blue skies.

The daredevil had to soar to a height of 60ft on his 100kg bike to ensure he made the 80ft gap.

Daredevil Dan told Caters News: "I was so excited about doing this, it was an incredible rush to jump the Pier, a first for me and a first for the town.

"It does need to be seen to be believed and I can't wait to do it again."

The stunt was done as part of Bournemouth's Wheels Festival, where Dan was joined by the rest of the FMX stunt team - Australian Emma McFerran, 23, and German Hannes Ackerman, 24.

Dan said: "We've impressed the crowds with tricks including massive Superman's, Cliff-Hangers and Tsunamis but the stunt jump over the Pier was the wildest I've done for a long time."
