A Lufthansa plane heading to Aberdeen was forced to turn back to Frankfurt after one of the engines 'failed' mid-air.

The incident occurred over Amsterdam not long after the plane had left Frankfurt.

The passengers reportedly thought the aircraft had hit turbulence, before the pilot made an announcement on the speaker system in German.

Aberdeen athlete Myles Edwards, 25, told the Evening Express: "Gasps were heard from people who understood the message before it was read out again in English, confirming the engine problems."

The paper added that passengers were seen in tears as they exited the plane back at Frankfurt.

An airline spokesman told news.stv.tv that crew were able to restart the engine "almost immediately", and added: "The crew decided to return to Frankfurt to enable maintenance staff to investigate the cause.

"The crew operated the standard, well-rehearsed procedures for such an incident and the safety of the passengers and crew was not compromised."

A later flight took 74 of the passengers onto Aberdeen on Monday.

Back in March, a plane heading for Aberdeen made an emergency landing at Norwich International Airport after a hydraulic fault was found mid-air.

The Eastern Airways Saab 2000 was 20 minutes into its flight from Norwich to Aberdeen when the fault was discovered.

And, in May last year, passengers on board a Lufthansa flight taking off from Helsinki Airport witnessed the terrifying moment an engine exploded and caught fire in the air.
