Mum whose son died from carbon monoxide poisoning in hotel launches foundation

A woman has started a foundation to raise awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning after her 11-year-old son died from noxious gas poisoning at a hotel in North Carolina.

Jeannie Williams, 49, and her son Jeffrey were found unconscious in their hotel room at the Best Western Plus Blue Ridge Plaza in Boone. Jeannie recovered after they were both taken to hospital, but Jeffrey died.

Speaking to ABC News, Jeannie says she has made it her life mission to make people aware of the lethal, odourless gas.

"What it means to me the most is just to get information to people of the importance of having detectors," she said. "If you have any kind of gas appliance or heating, detectors should be there to be safe and protect your family."

She told the news station that since her son's death, she has received letters from all over America from people who have had also lost loved once from carbon monoxide poisoning in hotel rooms.

The Daily Mail reports that Jeannie and Jeffrey were staying in the same room where a couple from Washington were discovered dead from carbon monoxide poisoning.

In the 911 call, a member of staff at the hotel was heard saying that the same thing had happened just weeks earlier.

Two years ago, a British banker and his wife were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning at their holiday home in Estonia.

Philip Townsend and MaryAnne were found in February 2012, and local police treated their deaths as an accident.

Relatives of the couple said: "It is with great regret that the family of Philip and MaryAnne Townsend have to report the tragic accident that took place at their home in Estonia on Friday.

"They both died due to carbon monoxide poisoning. There will be no further police investigation and there will be a UK coroners hearing in the normal way."
