These were the views from Sydney harbour on Friday as the Opera House was bathed in incredible patterns of light for the VIVID festival (Scroll down for slideshow and video).

Thousands flocked to see the 'lighting of the sails', most of them taking photos and videos to capture Australia's most famous landmark as they'd never seen it before.

Multicoloured digital designs, galactic-inspired patterns, snake skins and even giant butterflies shone lit up the building.

VIVID is a festival of light, music and ideas and runs from now until June 9. Last year's event brought $20 million and 800,000 visitors and its organiser Mike Baird says he hopes this year's festival will give an even bigger boost to the New South Wales economy.
