British baby taken from 'drunk' parents on holiday in Portugal

A baby girl was seized from her Irish parents on holiday in Portugal after concerns were raised for her welfare.

Police took the 14-month-old girl into care after a call from worried hotel staff. Witnesses claimed her parents were drunk and allegedly saw the child's mother staggering along an eighth floor hotel balcony while holding the baby.

Horrified holidaymakers also said they saw the couple throw the girl into a hotel swimming pool.

A police spokesman told The Sun: "We were called to a tourist resort where a foreign couple with a child were drunk and causing a disturbance."

The incident took place at around 9pm on Sunday at the four-star Hotel Paraiso in Albufeira on the Algarve.

The baby is being cared for at a hospital in Faro while the parents are questioned.

According to the Daily Mail, a hospital spokesman said the girl was fine, with "no health problems".

After being interviewed at the Albufeira Court on Monday, her parents were allowed to visit their daughter in hospital.

The family had been coming to the end of a week-long holiday, and will now need the permission of the family court before being allowed to fly home.
