Get the deck chairs out - Britain is set for the hottest day of the year this weekend.

It is likely the mercury will reach 23C on Friday and Saturday and, in some parts of the country, it could even reach 24C. By next Wednesday, the temperature could even reach 25C.

Leon Brown, meteorologist at The Weather Channel, told Aol Travel: "It will be warm to end the week and this weekend over the south of the UK, and it does now look like the south of the UK will remain fine on Sunday too with the rain holding back over Scotland and Ireland.

"We should see 21C to 23C over England and Wales on Friday and Saturday with a few spots reaching 24C. A slight risk still of a few isolated showers in the afternoon.

"On Sunday temperatures down a notch in the north and west at 18C to 19C and more cloudy and breezy. The south east may still get to 22 to 23C."

Leon did, however, warn that, officially, "temperatures can not be classified as a 'heatwave' unless they are in the high 20s (27C to 30C). However, to most Brits 24C is a heatwave in May.

Looking forward, Leon said there's more sunshine to come, with temperatures possibly even hitting 25C by Wednesday: "Early next week now looks warm over the south with the cooler northerly plunge heading down across west Biscay to Spain and Portugal where there will be a lot of storms early next week.

"Temperatures will still reach the low 20s over the UK and possibly 24C to 25C on Tuesday and Wednesday."

But all good things must come to an end. Leon added: "However, by the middle of next week prepare for some heavy and thundery downpours and then a lot cooler for the end of the week. Risk of flash floods later Wednesday and on Thursday.

"The bank holiday weekend will start showery over the north and west and then slowly improve as pressure builds. Temperatures near or slightly above the seasonal norm in the 16C to 20C range."
