A woman was seriously injured when her hair got caught in the engine of a go-kart on Wednesday evening in East Ayrshire.

The 48-year-old mother of two was at The Garage leisure complex in Kilmarnock when the accident happened.

According to the BBC, she was taken to hospital and treated for serious head and neck injuries.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At 8.40pm we received a report that a 48-year-old woman had been injured while riding a go-kart at The Garage in Kilmarnock. The local authority is investigating."

A council spokesman told Herald Scotland: "When the council was notified of this very serious incident, senior officers from Environmental Health services immediately conducted a full investigation of the site.

"The officers are now preparing a report, which will set out the circumstances of the accident, for the Procurator Fiscal.

"Our thoughts are with the lady who was injured in this serious accident and with her family at this very difficult time."

The Daily Mail reports that the woman is believed to have been at the leisure complex with her children.

It is believed her children were karting when she made the last-minute decision to have a go.

Last year, a Turkish woman was decapitated in a go-karting accident at a circuit in the west of Istanbul.

According to Hurriyet Daily News, Tuğba Erdoğan's scarf was tangled in the shaft of the cart, leading to the tragedy.

The 24-year-old lost control of her go-kart and crashed into the safety barriers. Witnesses said they saw something tighten around her neck and cut off her head with the force of the crash.
