Warm sunshine is predicted for much of the UK according to the weather forecast for May Bank Holiday.

In what is being hailed as a mini heatwave by some, most of the country is set to bask in pleasant spring weather, with the best of the sunshine likely across central and southern parts of England.

While northern parts of the UK will see some bright spells, conditions will be more changeable conditions.

The bright forecast has made tourism chiefs hopeful that people will be keen to explore what is on offer locally.

The Met Office said Saturday is set to be the best day for sunshine for most parts of the UK after a chilly night with local frost.

The highest temperatures on Saturday are expected in the West and South West, with the highest likely to be in the mid-teens in some areas, but the North East and East will be cooler with temperatures only likely to reach the low teens.

Cloudier conditions are expected to spread eastwards across the North, with some rain for western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

There will be more cloud across the north of the UK on Sunday with some rain in places, but it will still be a reasonable day for many, the Met Office said.

Southern and south-eastern parts will see the best of the weather on Sunday, with brighter and sunnier conditions.

The bright sunshine is expected to spread northwards on Bank Holiday Monday, leaving most regions with a fine day, apart from the west of Scotland and Northern Ireland, where there could be some rain at times, forecasters said.

The best of the sunshine is likely across southern England where temperatures should be approaching 18C (64F) and locally in the South East up to 20C (68F).

Eddy Carroll, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "It looks as though much of the UK will enjoy some pleasant spring weather this weekend. Although the nights and mornings will be chilly, it should feel pleasantly warm in the daytime sunshine.

"The best of that warm sunshine is likely across central and southern parts of England. Northern parts of the UK look set to have some rather changeable conditions, but even here there will be some brighter and drier spells, especially in the East."

James Berresford, VisitEngland's chief executive, said there is "plenty going on" for people to enjoy.

"The fine weather forecast for this weekend will hopefully entice those with a spirit of adventure to get out exploring on a day trip or short break in England this May Bank Holiday," he said.

Malcolm Roughead, VisitScotland's chief executive, said: "There's no time quite like a Bank Holiday weekend to get out and about and explore some of the great things that are on your doorstep, and it's a real bonus if there's fine weather into the bargain."
