US Airways has apologised to a customer after tweeting an extremely graphic photo of a naked woman on a toy plane.

The tweet was sent in response to a complaint made by the customer about her delayed flight from North Carolina to Oregon.

According to The Guardian, the airline took nearly an hour to remove the explicit image.

The shocking photo showed a woman lying exposed on a bed with a toy plane between her legs, and was shared on Monday afternoon.

It was captioned: "We welcome feedback, Elle. If your travel is complete, you can detail it here for review and follow-up."

New York Daily News reports that an investigation has been launched.

US Airways said sorry for the tweet and wrote: "We apologize for an inappropriate image recently shared as a link in one of our responses. We've removed the tweet and are investigating."

In a statement, the airline said: "Unfortunately the image was inadvertently included in a response to a customer. We immediately realised the error and removed our tweet.

"We deeply regret the mistake and we are currently reviewing our processes to prevent such errors in the future."

The image was retweeted more than 500 times and US Airways, which has 422,000 Twitter followers, said it had tried to flag the image as inappropriate after it had been tweeted back to its account by a user.
