EasyHotel, the budget hotel chain owned by airline easyJet will open it 21st hotel in the unlikely location of Croydon.

Expansion plans are currently under way for the hotel in the South London suburb.

As well as its three wholly owned sites in Croydon, Old Street and Glasgow, the chain also has 18 franchised hotels, reports This is Money.

These hotels are spotted across the globe in cities as far apart as Dubai, Berlin and Johannesburg.

The hotel group has recently added 72 bedrooms to the existing 90 at its Old Street hotel in Central London.

Chief executive Simon Champion, said: 'We're opening hotels in Prague and Frankfurt later this year and we're on the lookout for more sites.

'We're a very international brand, with half of our customers coming from Europe, and we concentrate on providing consistent quality at the budget end of the market.'

A spokesman for parent company easyGroup said tha the new hotel in Croydon will occupy the top four floors of the nine-storey former office block.

The ground floor will be home to the first easyFoodstore, the company's new budget supermarket.

EasyJet founder, Sir Stelios said the Croydon store would hopefully be a launchpad for a wider rollout of budget stores, reports the Croydon Advertiser.

He said: "I have a feeling that there is a gap in the food retail market – a niche below some of the current budget operators such as Aldi and Lidl.

"Concentrating on affordable, basic "no-brand-name" packet and tinned foods at bargain prices, easyFoodstore underlines the need for additional reliable day-to-day provision of basic foodstuffs."

No details have been given on a likely opening date.
