Britons hoping to book a last minute Easter getaway will be happy to find some destinations as much as 25 per cent cheaper than last year.

Easter week (April 17-24) in Cape Town in a four-star hotel costs on average £640 per person according to Expedia.co.uk.

The South African rand has plunged against the pound in recent months, while other places where spending money will go further include Dubai, Marrakech in Morocco, and Paris.

But Expedia warned that average prices for destinations such as the Channel Islands, Amsterdam and the Canary Islands had gone up.

Expedia.co.uk managing director Andy Washington said: "Some of the best deals are to be found further afield, although Disneyland Paris in particular is more than 15% cheaper this year than last."

Meanwhile, Gatwick reported that around 1.8 million passengers were expected to travel through the West Sussex airport over the Easter holidays.

Despite rising prices, Amsterdam is the fourth most popular destination from Gatwick over Easter, with Barcelona the most popular, followed by Malaga in southern Spain, and Geneva.
