A killer crocodile that terrorised and tormented Ugandan villagers has finally been caught - and it's believed to be the biggest crocodile in the world.

The crocodile, which weighs a tonne, is believed to have killed and eaten at least four fisherman along the shores of Lake Victoria in Kakira village in the Jinja district of eastern Uganda and maimed several others, reports the Metro.

The giant reptile was captured by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) officials following a four-day hunt in the village.

A large crowd gathered to watch officials trap the deadly beast with meat on a hook and then pull it on to the back of a pick-up truck, Ugandan newspaper New Vision reported.

"Residents appealed to UWA to hunt the crocodile following the death of a resident from Kakira town council in Jinja district," said UWA official Sulani Tumanya.

Many fisherman in the area refused to go near the lake until the notorious crocodile was captured as they feared for their lives.

Now that the reptile has been captured, residents can resume their fishing.

According to the Metro, the crocodile, believed to be 80 years old, was transferred to the Murchison Falls National Park.

The one tonne croc is only 47 kgs less than the former world's heaviest crocodile known as Lolong, reports New Vision. Lolong was a 21ft, one-tonne saltwater crocodile from Philippines. It died on February 10, 2013 at the age of 50.

Could this killer crocodile now be the largest in the world?
