When the pilot discovered the fault, he calmly declared an emergency and then circled the airport to shed fuel and lower the weight of the Avianca Airlines passenger jet before attempting to land it.

The pilot then made a skillful emergency landing at the Juscelino Kubitschek Internatioal airport in Brasilia, Brazil, on Friday, authorities said.

Airport fire crews then fomaed the plane to prevent fire.

None of the 49 passengers or 5 crew members on board the Fokker 100 jet were injured when the plane landed on its rear wheels before lowering the nose onto the runway. reports the Daily Mail.

'The plane suffered a hydraulic problem and the front landing gear did not open, so the pilot did a belly landing,' an Air Force spokesman said.

Following the emergency landing, one of Brasilia's two runways was closed, delaying flights into Brazil's fourth largest airport.
