The world's busiest airport is... Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. No, w'd never heard of it either. But apparently, its busier than Heathrow, London's biggest airport, which is only the third busiest on the planet. The

According to the Daily Mail, rankings are based on passenger numbers from 1,105 airports worldwide.

The figures released today by the Airports Council International's preliminary passenger traffic results show that Heathrow had 72 million passengers in 2013 - a rise of 3.3 per cent on 2012.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in the southern US city of Atlanta retained its position of the world's busiest airport after playing host to 94 million passengers in 2013.

This was a slight decrease on the airport's 2012 performance, reports CNN.

Atlanta airport is an important connection airport for travellers within the US as well as visitors from Europe continuing further west into the US or on to Central and South America.

The Georgia airport also saw the most aeroplane movement in 2013 with 910,000 take-offs and landings in 2013.

Airports in Bejing and Dubai are the major movers as air traffic drifts east, reports the Daily Mail.

Beijing Capital International Airport secured the position of second busiest airport in the world with 84 million passengers passing through in 2013 - an increase on the previous year.

Heathrow, with its five busy terminals and constant rush of travellers is the busiest airport in Europe and the third busiest airport in the world.

Tokyo International Aiport, Chicago O'Hare International and Los Angeles International followed.

Dubai jumped from tenth place in 2012 to seventh in 2013.

66.4 million passengers passed throught Dubai International airport, the main air hub for the Middle East in 2013 - an increase of 15 per cent from 2012 figures.

Dubai is set to continue expanding for the next few years and is expected to move up several spots again in the 2014 rankings, says the Daily Mail.

Paris's Charles De Gaulle, Texas terminus Dallas-Fort Worth and Indonesia's main airport Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta round out the top ten busiest airports.

Air passenger traffic grew last year with the world's airports serving a total of 5.4 billion passengers in 2013 - 4 per cent more than 2012.

Of all the airports in the top ten, Hartsfield was the only one that saw a drop in passenger percentage, according to Wabe.org.
