Mum flies to Edinburgh on son's passport and back again

A British mother was shocked to discover she had been allowed to fly to and from Edinburgh using her 16-year-old son's passport.

Elaine Willis, 49 only realised as she went through security that she had picked up her son Jamie's passport by mistake.

But she was allowed to board her Flybe flight from Manchester without any issue - and also return home again using the same passport.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said: " I decided not to risk telling them about the mix up and there was lots of angst on my part. But I couldn't believe it when they let me through... the checks were clearly very poor."

A spokesman for the airline told the Mail that the company requires photo ID for commercial reasons and not for security, and said there had been no breach of security.

"Flybe can confirm that there is no requirement for passengers to be in possession of a passport or any other form of photographic ID to fly domestically in the UK.

A spokesman from Edinburgh Airport told The Herald Scotland: "There are no legal obligations for a passenger to carry their passport when flying within the UK."
