After the hottest day of the year to start British Summer Time, Britain is to bask in more warm weather over the coming days and is expected to see temperatures than Ibiza, with forecasters predicting highs of 23C by the end of the week.

The highest temperature recorded over the weekend was 20.9C in St James's Park in London and Santon Downham in Norfolk.

While forecasters have predicted similar temperatures for parts of the UK this week, the French Riviera is expecting highs of just 17C over the next few days, 14C is forecast for Madrid and Ibiza will be 17C.

Rachel Vince, senior forecaster at MeteoGroup, said: "The mild weather looks like continuing through much of Britain through the next few days. I'm not sure whether we will top 20.9C because there will be more cloud around, but we could get close or equal to that at times.

But The Weather Channel says temperatures could reach 23C in the South East on Thursday.

Chief forecaster of Leon Brown tells AOL Travel: "Temperatures in the South East UK this week will be warmer than Ibiza and the South and West of France where it will be quite wet."

"Fog will be the main concern on Tuesday morning with some dense patches for the morning rush over the Midlands, Wales, Northern England and Ireland. A wet start to southern Scotland.

"The morning fog is expected to lift to a bright day with hazy sunshine over Central and Eastern England, while much of Scotland remains overcast with some patchy light rain in the east. Temperatures will be up to 20C in the South East and 18 to 19C in the Midlands. In contrast, a cold 7C in damp and cloudy East Scotland."

Mr Brown adds that while North East England, South West England and Scotland will see some grey and rainy weather on Wednesday, "the South East should escape dry and quite sunny with temperatures as high as 21C."

"Almost a repeat performance for Thursday with showers in the west and fine and warm weather over the South East. We may see temperatures reach 22 to 23C."

"On Friday we will lose the warmer South East flow, but still a warm day with temperatures up to 17 to 19C in the East.

"Unfortunately the Atlantic weather wins the battle for the weekend. Rain spreading east on Saturday which may linger over the south on Sunday to spoil the day. Colder and clearer over the North."
