Budapest is the city of choice for Britons looking for a bargain city break.

Those willing to spend a bit more might like to head to Boston, USA, the most expensive destination for a short city break.

Of 25 leading cities, Budapest proved the best-value for a couple on a two-night trip including accommodation, sightseeing and local transport fares, according to a Post Office travel money survey.

The whole package came to just £117 in Budapest, with Vilnius in Lithuania the next-cheapest city.
In contrast, Boston in Massachusetts proved the most expensive, with costs of £412 for a typical two-
night stay, with New York the next most-expensive destination at £366.

Stockholm was the dearest European destination, at £363, while London was one of the more-expensive cities with a total cost of £291.

Other good-value cities included Warsaw (£132) and Prague (£136), with the Czech capital offering the cheapest meals and drinks.

Copenhagen, at £306, remained pricey but costs have fallen almost 30% in the last 12 months. The best buy in the eurozone was Lisbon, at £137.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: "Meals and drinks are rarely included in city break packages so it is important to check prices before booking.

"Over a weekend break we found that tourists could pay four times as much for meals and drinks in Copenhagen as they would in Prague. We also found that a meal for two with wine in Prague cost £22, less than half the price charged in 17 other cities across Europe."
