The world is full of wonders, both natural and man-made, but there are some sights that are simply awesome, and it is those that are the subject of a new book from Lonely Planet.

The travel guide has put together a new book of the top 50 must-see structures and natural creations entitled World's Great Wonders, including fascinating facts, beautiful photography and detailed information for anyone unsure of where their next dream location might be.

From the breath-taking scale of the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and the natural oddity that is the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland to the poetic beauty of the Taj Mahal and the Potala Palace in Tibet, home to the Dalai Lama and the world's highest palace, Lonely Planet's expert travellers reveal the history and natural events that gave rise to the wonders of the world.

Jheni Osman, the author of the book, told the Daily Mail: "This book takes you a step further on your travels, revealing the science and engineering behind how epic structures were built or incredible natural wonders formed.

Also among the must-see wonders are China's Great Wall and the Terracotta Army, the Hagia Sophia in Turkey, Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater and the Great Rift Valley in Ethiopia.
