British tourist 'raped by hotel security guard' at Egypt holiday resort

A British holidaymaker has reportedly been raped by a security guard at a hotel in Sharm el Sheik in Egypt.

According to the Daily Mail, the guard had been escorting the woman, who was alone, back to her luxury five-star hotel when he pulled her into her bedroom and carried out the attack.

Hampshire Police are now leading the investigation after the businesswoman, thought to be in her 40s, was flown back to Britain.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office told the Daily Mail: "We are aware of an incident involving a British national. We are providing assistance."

It also went onto warn British tourists about a rise in crime in hotels since the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011.

The news is the latest in a string of bad headlines coming out of Egypt's resorts, historically a very popular spot with British tourists seeking winter sun.

Back in February, an Islamist militant group carried out a deadly bomb attack on a tourist bus in the Sinai peninsula, which killed four people.

According to the BBC, the group said it was part of their "economic war" against Egyptian authorities, which it described as "traitors".

Two South Korean tour guides, a Korean tourist and the Egyptian driver were killed in the attack.

There were 31 tourists on the bus at the time, and 14 other South Koreans were taken to hospital.
