Formula One star Michael Schumacher is showing "small, encouraging signs" after a ski accident in France left him in a coma.

The 45-year-old German racing driver's family released a statement saying: "We are and remain confident that Michael will pull through and will wake up."

According to the BBC, Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm released the statement on behalf of his family because of the "increasing interest in [his] condition in light of the start of the Formula 1 season".

The statement continued: "There sometimes are small, encouraging signs, but we also know this is the time to be very patient.

"Michael has suffered severe injuries. It is very hard to comprehend for all of us that Michael, who had overcome a lot of precarious situations in the past, has been hurt so terribly in such a banal situation.

"It was clear from the start this will be a long and hard fight for Michael, and we are taking this fight on together with the team of doctors, whom we fully trust.

"The length of the process is not the important part for us.

"It is heart-warming to see how much sympathy his family is shown and I can say the family is extremely grateful for it."

Just days ago it was reported that doctors told Michael's family that only "a miracle" could save him.

A senior German journalist said: "He is in terrible shape but until the family issue a statement we cannot write about it. The family have, we are told, been informed that only a miracle can bring him back now."

The racing driver suffered a severe head injury while skiing in the French Alps in December and has been in an induced coma since this accident.
