A rail employee in New York has been hit and killed by a train while working on tracks in Manhattan.

James Romansoff, 58, was working on tracks overnight when he was hit.

The Metro-North Railroad confirmed the incident and said it happened at 12.54am on Monday at Park Avenue and East 106th Street, reports the Daily Mail.

There were about 50 passengers on the train, which was the 12.47am from Grand Central Station heading to Poughkeepsie.

The man was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The death is being investigated by Metro-North and MTA police.

According to CBS Local, initial findings indicate Romansoff went beyond a protected work zone while restoring power to a section of the track.
