Cornwall hotel receives £500k lottery funding
A hotel in St Ives, Cornwall, has been awarded £525,000 of lottery cash to help regenerate the area.
The Big Lottery's Coastal Communities Fund awarded the cash sum to the Carbis Bay Hotel to facilitate a beachfront regeneration, making it the focal point for the local community, as well as for tourists and business visitors.
According to the BBC, the hotel said the money would go towards creating a water sports centre, conference and wedding venue, a restaurant, and a community hub.
The hotel added that the work would also help the area create a year-round economy rather than just relying on seasonal tourism.
The Carbis Bay Hotel & Spa is one of more than 50 projects across the UK to receive a share of £27.7 million through the Communities Fund delivered by the Big Lottery on behalf of the Government.
Father and son owners of Carbis Bay Hotel, Malcolm and Stephen Baker, are funding the overall development project, and have already spent £5 million in upgrading the hotel, including the £750,000 spa, which opened last year.
Stephen told the Cornish Man: "We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded the Coastal Communities Fund grant – it will go a long way towards helping us deliver our flagship regeneration project and support sustainable economic growth in Carbis Bay.
"The beachfront regeneration will benefit the local community and local economy, and help to reduce the seasonality of the tourism industry in West Cornwall."
Head of Visit Cornwall, Malcolm Bell, added the grant was "excellent news not only for the Carbis Bay Hotel and Spa, but also for the wider Cornish tourism industry".
