Bus gets stuck in huge hole on Somerset road

Updated

A bus became trapped in a metre-wide hole in a road in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, on Tuesday.

The vehicle, owned by First, is thought to have got stuck after a burst water main caused the collapse, according to Avon and Somerset Police.

Eyewitness Elizabeth Island said the driver of the single-deck bus looked "in distress".

Speaking to the Western Daily Press, she said: "The drain must have subsided. He cannot move and the road is now flooding."

According to the BBC, a First Bus spokesman said: "There were passengers on board the bus at the time of the incident but no-one has been injured."

Just last week, a double decker bus carrying 16 passengers toppled over into a ditch in Somerset, injuring two.

The number 21 Taunton service crashed just after 1pm on the Coast Road in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset.

According to the BBC, the bus company, First Somerset, said the drainage ditch collapsed under the weight of the bus, but that, thankfully, nobody was seriously injured.
