Jeremy Clarkson's AMG Mercedes up for sale

Jeremy Clarkson SL55 AMG

A high-performance Mercedes convertible once owned by Jeremy Clarkson has been advertised for sale.
The blue-green SL55 AMG Roadster is being offered by Emerald Motor Company in Hampshire for £13,990, a fraction of the car's £90,000 asking price when new.

Purchased by the Top Gear presenter in 2002, the powerful premium drop-top instantly made an impression, with Clarkson even taking it onto the BBC show to review.

Bowled over by the SL's many talents, he described it as the 'Swiss army knife' of the car world.

"It's a top-down funster, a long-distance cruiser, a muscle car, a Messerschmitt, pose-mobile," he said during the car's Top Gear shakedown.

Once a flagship of Mercedes' in-house performance division AMG, the SL55 is powered by a supercharged 5.4-litre V8 engine, developing 476bhp.

Despite weighing around two tonnes, the car's monstrous engine allowed it to get from 0-60mph in a Ferrari-baiting 4.7 seconds and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. With the limiter removed, this luxury convertible would sail up to 200mph.

As befits a top-end German sports GT, the SL55 is loaded with kit, including a full leather interior, television, telephone, voice-activated CD player and a fully electric folding metal roof.

"Our Mercedes SL55 is one for the true enthusiast," Chris Carey, boss of Emerald Motor Company, told the Daily Mail.

"This actual car appeared in an episode of Top Gear as it was purchased from new by the world's best known motoring journalist, Jeremy Clarkson.

"The blistering performance is delivered from the supercharged V8, giving it 500 horses under the bonnet and all the luxuries that Mercedes could give you at the time.

"It comes with Mr Clarkson's seal of approval, so if it's good enough for him..."
