Bus driver shot twice in the chest saved by Bible in pocket
A bus driver who was shot and stabbed in a random attack in Dayton, Ohio, on monday was saved by the Bible in his pocket.
Rickey Wagoner, 49, was assaulted by three men while standing outside his bus.
Sgt. Michael Pauley of the Dayton Police Department told the Dayton Daily News: "His bus had stopped running and he got out to see what the problem was."
He was shot three times, once in the leg, and twice in the chest.
Pauley said he was saved by the the book in his chest pocket, a religious devotional titled "The Message," which is a modern translation of the Bible.
He said some kind of "intervention" meant he was still alive.
"The two bullets were stopped by the New Testament book in his (shirt) pocket,"Pauley said.
"There was obviously some kind of intervention involved in this incident, because he probably should not be here."
Wagoner was attacked while trying to fix a malfunction with his bus. When he turned to face the there teens he was shot in the chest. He managed to wrestle the gun from the shooter but another round went in his leg in the struggle.
He stabbed one of the attackers in the leg with a pen, before they ran off. According to the NY Daily News, he picked up the firearm and shot at the three attackers as they fled.
The attack is under police investigation, and one line of inquiry is that the teens were carrying out a gang initiation test.
