Attempted murder arrest after woman hit by train in Suffolk

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman was hit by a train in Suffolk.

The woman sustained head and pelvic injuries when she was hit by the 17.55 Ipswich to Peterborough train at Spikes Lane level crossing in Stowmarket on Sunday.

She was taken by ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, and is being treated for her injuries, which are said to be non life-threatening, reports the BBC.

British Transport Police (BTP) arrested a 37-year-old man at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police, which attended the incident with officers from BTP, said Network Rail informed them of a second person who had been found laying on the track, who was also still alive.

A BTP spokesman told the Bury Free Press: "On arrival at the scene, officers arrested a 37-year-old man from Ipswich on suspicion of attempted murder. He currently remains in custody. The incident is currently being treated as suspicious and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident, including how the woman came to be on the tracks."
