London's 'rudest restaurant' to get friendly revamp
Wong Kei, aka the 'rudest restaurant in London', has closed for refurbishment and will reopen with a friendlier service next month.
The Chinatown eatery is famous for its snarling waiters, insulting customers who pay by card or ask for a knife and fork, and chasing diners who don't leave a generous tip.
Daniel Luc, who is reopening the Wardour Street restaurant, told the Evening Standard: "Maybe there was an issue with rude staff 20 to 30 years ago, but I don't think so any more. I don't know whether that's a good thing or not."
Wong Kei is due to open on 10 March and while tourists dining for the first time may be pleased by the good customer service they're set to receive, regulars are not so keen.
Loyal diner, archaeologist Brenna Hassett, 33, told The Independent: "This is deeply tragic. Wong Kei's is a student favourite of mine and a crew of friends. The order to 'go upstairs' rings forever in my mind."
One review on TripAdvisor reads: "Not a great range of more English food but definitely a huge range of Chinese food, the rudeness of the staff is hilarious but don't take them literally."
