A bus with one passenger on board crashed into a shop while the driver was buying a newspaper.

The bus carrying the hapless traveller rolled into the Edelweiss florist in Stowmarket, Suffolk, on Wednesday morning, knocking a traffic light over in the process.

Chris Speed, business manager for the operator of the bus, First Eastern Counties, told the BBC: "Unfortunately, the vehicle has moved forward, gone through the lights and ended up in the shop.

Mr Speed said the long-time driver had stopped at the junction of Bury Street and Station Road West to buy a newspaper, adding: "He was only a few metres away from the bus."

Nobody was injured in the incident, but Isabel Wilton, the owner of Edelweiss, said the collision had made it impossible for people to get into her shop.

But, speaking to the Ipswich Star, she added: "The shock of it did all set in but the most important thing was that nobody was hurt and that is all that matters at the end of the day. It could have been so serious."

Suffolk police are investigating the incident and Mr Speed said the bus would be tested to see if there was a mechanical fault.
