Newlywed bride killed by suspected drunk driver
A bride has been killed after being crashed into by a suspected drunk driver, just four days after her wedding.> 36-year-old Mariah Collins was travelling with her husband Bryan and her 11-year-old son, to start a new life in Florida, when a teenager drove into their car on a Michigan highway.
Both Bryan and Mrs Collins' son remain in hospital but are expected to survive.
The unidentified teen driver, who was driving south on the northbound carriageway of the busy highway, escaped with only minor injuries.
Police believe he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, though it is not known how fast he was travelling. He is currently being held in Genesee county jail.
Bryan and his wife Mariah had only met a few months ago and got married in a shotgun wedding less than a week before the fatal accident.
Her cousin Tiffany Mooney said the woman's life was "ripped right out from under her."
"This didn't need to happen. No one deserved to do this. I wish it could have been different," she told the Flint Journal.
The US is currently suffering something of an epidemic of drink-driving. Mrs Collins' death is the 12th to be caused by suspected drunk drivers travelling on the wrong side of the road in the country just last weekend.
