Aberdeen takes crown for highest concentration of 'Chelsea Tractors'
New research by insurance specialist Admiral has revealed that there has been a 22 per cent rise in 4x4 drivers in the past five years and surprisingly, they are not all from the affluent area of west London.
In fact, the highest concentration of 4x4 owners is in the AB31 postcode of Aberdeenshire.
Admiral looked at data from more than 3 million motorists to see which of them drive a 4x4, where they live and what they do.
The number of 4x4 owners has increased considerably since 2009 yet owners aren't just purchasing them for their premium image.
Admiral managing director, Sue Longthorn said, "Among 4x4 owners there appears to be two very distinct groups: those who have to drive one because they are practical vehicles in rough terrain, where winter weather can be extreme. And those who live in cities and urban areas, who might only have to tackle speed bumps and kerbs most days, but for who 4x4s have become the must-have vehicle.
"Not only do they have the looks and space, but they also have the performance."
|Position||Postcode||Town or district||Percentage with 4x4s|
|2nd||SW7||South Kensington & Knightsbridge, London||23%|
|4th||W8||Kensington & Holland Park, London||23%|
|6th||TN5||Wadhurst, East Sussex||22%|
|10th||BN5||Henfield, West Sussex||20%|
Not ones to give up on the humble Range Rover just yet, residents of South Kensington and Knightsbridge remain close runners-up in terms of 4x4 ownership.
Kensington, Holland Park and Chelsea also boast an impressive concentration of off-road vehicle owners but it is interesting to see what occupation warrants a 4x4.
Not surprisingly, farmers are the most likely to purchase an off-road vehicle, with 31 per cent of 4x4 owners working on the land. But in close second and third places were property developers and stockbrokers.
Land Rover dominates the list of the most popular 4x4s that Admiral insures, with the top three positions occupied by their cars. The Range Rover is by far the most common, followed by the Freelander and Discovery.
