Police were on the hunt on Monday after a 6ft crocodile was reported to be on the loose in Bristol.

Nick Gargan, the Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police, said the reptile had been spotted by a bus driver under a bridge in Bristol.

"One of our officers was flagged down by a bus driver today, claiming to have seen a 6ft crocodile under Coronation Bridge. We can't find it," he wrote on Twitter.

When asked by one Twitter user whether there was a crocodile on the loose, Mr Gargan replied: "it may mean precisely that, madam. No need to stay indoors - but you may want to think twice before you go water-skiing."

A police spokesman told the BBC: "We were called at 10:28am on Monday, 3 February, to reports of a crocodile sighted on Bedminster Bridge.

"We carried out a search of the area but found no trace of the reptile."

Since the police search, someone started a 'mock croc' Twitter profile, calling it the Chris the Croc.

According to the Bristol Post, the mayor George Ferguson has already been in touch with it, writing on the page: "Seems as though there is very little provision for Crocodile capture George... #nextyearsbudget."

Others took to Chris the Croc's profile posting doctored pictures of a crocodile appearing at Bristol landmarks.

Members of the public have also been making jokes about the sighting, with one Twitter user writing: "@ngargan_police #firstbus drivers can see crocodiles but they can't see cyclists, madness!
