Is your marriage in trouble? Relationship on the rocks? Well, according to researchers, you could save your partnership and your cash by simply renting a few romantic movies.

A study at the University of Rochester in New York found that a few classic weepy's or rom-coms helped couples going through a rocky patch to get over their troubles, by reminding them of the relationship skills they need to put into practice.

In fact, the researchers claim that the likes of Love Story, The Way We Were or On Golden Pond could be just as useful as couples counselling, and even reduce the rate of splits from 24 per cent to 11 per cent after three years.

The study involved 174 couples, each of whom attended a 10-minute lecture on the importance of relationship awareness, and how movies can help draw attention to one's own behaviour.

Each couple then settled in to watch 1967 rom-com Two for the Road, a film following the ups and downs of marriage after 12 years.

After viewing the movie, each couple discussed it together, and compared what they had seen with their own relationship. A list of 47 films, including Gone With The Wind, Indecent Proposal and Steel Magnolias, were prescribed as homework for the participants.

The results revealed that viewing five such films each month helped the struggling couples to resolve their differences and strengthen their relationship.

According to the Daily Express, Professor of psychology Ronald Rogge said: "People have a pretty good sense of what they might be doing right or wrong. You might not be able to get your husband into a couples' group, especially if you are happy, but watching a movie and having a discussion about it, that's not so scary."
