A swarm of 'zombie bees' is threatening hives along America's West Coast, according to reports.

Mutant bees that act like "a sort of a combination of zombies and aliens mixed together", first surfaced in the north east of the US.

The problem is a fly called the Apocephalus borealis, which lays eggs in honeybees that hatch and then eat the host's body from the inside out, causing havoc, reports The Voice Of Russia.

The paper adds that the disease causes the bees to behave like zombies before it drives them out of their hives and kills them within a few hours.

Professor John Hafernik,of San Francisco University, told The Sun: "They fly around in a disoriented way, get attracted to light, and then fall down and wander around in a way that's sort of reminiscent of zombies in the movies.

"Sometimes we've taken to calling [it], when they leave their hives, 'the flight of the living dead.'"

Local agricultural agencies are considering trapping bees to investigate the zombie bee threat to farmers.
