San Diego is the city with it all: stunning beaches with endless sandy miles, quirky bars, bustling and vibrant atmosphere, picturesque harbour and, most importantly, it has the Californian sun.

This is a city with something for everyone; nightlife for the party lovers, the famous San Diego Zoo for the kids and baseball for sports fans.

In peak season the city, situated on the Pacific Ocean coast, is teeming with tourists, so if you can, head there when they've disappeared: September is ideal. The balmy climate means temperatures can still hit 30 degrees, and it very rarely rains.

San Diego, known as the birthplace of California, is the second largest city in the state - and should most certainly not be overlooked in favour of the well-trodden city of Los Angeles. Rich in history, expansive beaches, and beautiful skylines, San Diego is begging to be explored - here are our tip five things to start you off.

1: Chill out on Coronado Beach

California is known for its beaches, and this one does not disappoint. Take a short ferry ride across the bay (an enjoyable experience in itself) or drive over the stunning Coronado bridge (pictured above). Once you've arrived, you'll be wowed by the vast, unspoilt sands. If you're brave, take a dip in the chilly Pacific, or stroll down to one of the beachside resorts and grab a spot of lunch. Buy a ticket for the ferry on the harbour or on board.

2: Go exploring

Hire a car and put a day aside to go explore the surrounding area. San Diego is on the border of Mexico, and it's worth a drive in that direction as you're taken through the mountains. Alternatively, wind your way up to one of the national parks - Anza-Borrego Desert State Park or Joshua Tree National Park (pictured above) are well worth a day trip.

3. Take a tour of the USS Midway (complete with kissing statue)

This is a great day out. One of America's longest-serving aircraft carriers and now a museum, you get to do all sorts of things you've never done before, like sit in the cockpit of a fighter jet. Don't miss a visit the kitchens and hear the stories from real people who worked onboard the ship. Set aside at least three hours - it's an huge ship with masses to see. Visit midway.org.

4. Got to a baseball game

Swing by Petco Park, home to the San Diego Padres. You'll be treated to incredible panoramic views if you sit in the bleachers, or a close up of the players if you opt for pitch-side seats. A great family atmosphere, check out what's on before you book, as you could get lucky and be treated to one of the impressive firework displays, or even better - $1 hot dog days.

5. Eat at Donovan's Steak House

If you're going to eat anywhere, make it Donovan's. Mouthwateringly juicy steaks which cut like butter, this world-famous establishment uses only USDA Prime Steaks. Opt for the Cajun rib-eye if you like your meat seasoned or the prime filet mignon if you're a 'less is more' believer. Attentive service and a traditional setting, its upmarket but with none of the snobbery. Make sure you dip into the cocktail menu too - their vodka pear concoction is delicious. It's not cheap, but this is one experience you don't want to miss. Booking a table is recommended.
