British holidaymakers trapped in hotel rooms after freak Tenerife storms

Hundreds of British tourists were left trapped in their rooms after a Tenerife hotel was battered by a freak 100mph storm.

Terrifying gales hit the Hotel Los Gigantes on the south west corner of the island, ripping metal cladding from the roof, smashing doors and windows, smashing glass in the reception area, and ruining the dining room.

The hotel is a favourite with Brits. Widow Jessie Dexter, 81, from Coventry, has stayed at the hotel three times a year for the last 31 years.

She told the Birmingham Mail: "I've never seen a storm like it in all my years coming here.

"The wind was terrible and it was even worse because the storm struck in the middle of the night."

Jessie, who had booked a three-week holiday in a seventh floor room, added: "I was absolutely terrified."

Hotel manager Antonio Fleixa, told the Liverpool Echo : "It is the worst storm we have ever seen here."

He said that 300 guests were staying at the hotel, many who had booked through Thomson.

A spokesman for Thomson said: "We are aware of damage to the Los Gigantes Hotel in Tenerife during a storm.

"Our team in Tenerife is assisting customers in every way possible. Due to the damage, Thomson will be offering customers currently in resort – as well as those due to arrive – the option to relocate to alternative accommodation."
