British man dies in mudslide while renovating holiday home in Spain

A British man has died in a mudslide while working on his holiday home in Spain.

Andrew McGaughey, 65, was left buried to his neck when the ground beneath him gave way as he was filling a ditch with concrete.

A building materials delivery man found him buried at the house near Torrox, half an hour east of Malaga, and called emergency services.

However, Mr McGaughey was already dead when the air ambulance arrived.

The accident, which happened on Tuesday, followed heavy rain that had likely loosened the ground.

Dutch neighbour Gertrudis Van Delf told the Daily Mail: "He'd been saying for some time he was worried about the stability of the house because of subsidence.

"He had just retired and was planning on coming to live here all year round."

According to the paper, a spokesman for the Civil Guard in Malaga said: "Everything is pointing to a freak accident."

Mr McGaughey was a divorced father-of-two who had spent Christmas at the property with his girlfriend, who returned to the UK a week before the accident.

Back in October, a British pensioner died in a landslide after climbing a mountain in the Himalayas.

Alan Slater, 67, from Walton, Liverpool, was killed after conquering the 17,100ft Shetidhar peak.
